Plexus FS are celebrating the completion of the full rewire and installation of a new fire safety system at one of Swansea University’s largest buildings, Vivian Tower.
Located on the Singleton Campus, Vivian Tower is a ten-story, mixed-use building and home to a range of users including laboratories, administration rooms, offices, nurse training facilities and more.
As a busy venue with a high level of footfall, safety is of paramount importance, and after an annual safety assessment, the decision was made to overhaul the entire system and install a new one.
“Between replacement parts becoming increasingly difficult to obtain and cabling being deemed insufficient for a busy building, the assessment recommended a new system,” said James Watts, Contracts Manager at Plexus FS.
The project commenced in November 2021 and involved the installation and wiring of a new system that included:
- Five Hochiki 4-Loop Advancedmxpro5 Panels
- 1,000+ Hochiki Devices
- Gent Aspirators in lift shafts
- Voice Activated Sounders (English and Welsh)
It wasn’t an option to close the building, so the new system had to be installed while the existing system remained operational, and by July 2022, the new system had been installed.
“After successfully testing the new system, it was commissioned in July 2022,” said James, “and at that stage, we begin the decommissioning and “rip-out” of the old system”.
This process was undertaken with a focus on minimising disruption to those using the building and by early 2023, the old system was completely removed.
