Working through the principal contractor, T Richard Jones (Betws) Ltd, we recently worked on a project for the NHS that involved the installation of multiple automatic doors and access control solutions at a new Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in South Wales.

Located in the centre of one of Wales’ busiest hospitals, the new ICU was fitted out with a range of state-of-the-art, hi-tech medical devices and we were proud to play our part in the project which included:

  • The installation of ten sets of automatic doors
  • Integrated a Salto access control system to the pharmacy area
  • Installation of 3-Point touchless sensors for door access

“This was a fantastic project to work on,” said Hybrid Automation Specialist, Richard Bennett. “It was great to be involved in such an important project for this hospital and to work with the TRJ team once again.”

With extensive experience working in medical environments, the Plexus FS team were well-versed in the need for systems that maintain excellent levels of safety and sanitation as Richard explained.

“The automatic doors we installed are controlled by touchless sensors that remove the need for people to press a button, thus minimising the threat of cross-infection between staff, visitors and patients.”

“The sensors have three settings that can be controlled by staff, including:

  • Auto – which activates the opening of the door when the sensor picks up a person approaching.
  • Open – which holds the door in an open position, which is important when patients are being transferred into and out of the various rooms.
  • Off – If there is a requirement to operate the doors manually.”

However, with any automated system, safety is of paramount importance, and the system has built-in safety measures asRichard reflected.

“The doors are fitted with safety sensors on either side, so if a person is opposite a door when it begins to open or close, it will automatically reverse the action if the sensors are triggered. What’s more, the doors have guards on the rear of each door that prevent fingers from getting caught in the door as it closes.”

With the ICU scheduled for opening in a matter of weeks (at the time of writing), this is another project the automation team at Plexus FS are proud to be involved in.
