In 2022, Gower College Swansea, one of the largest Further Education Colleges in West Wales undertook a review of the security assets located across their estate.
With several campuses throughout the city, the safety of students, staff and visitors is of paramount importance and in order to future-proof the systems used, the College decided to undertake a phased upgrade of the CCTV cameras.
A tender was issued to upgrade the analogue system to an IP system with 4K capabilities and, after a comprehensive bidding process, Plexus FS was appointed to undertake the phased upgrade.
“The analogue system, while operational, did not give us the future-proofing we required,” said IT Projects Lead Danial Thomas, “and we are delighted to be working with a local company with such a strong track record in this field to help us upgrade the CCTV System.”
With work starting in October 2022, the Plexus team are systematically working across the various campuses located in Tycoch, Llwyn Y Bryn, Sketty Hall, Gorseinon and Fforestfach to replace existing cameras with the new 4K IP units.
“These state-of-the-art cameras are a real game changer,” said Chris Thomas of Plexus. “Not only do they provide high-resolution images, even in low light situations, but the ability to compress file size means the storage requirements are a lot less than the previous analogue system.”
The installation teams are also working alongside the College to utilise the existing IP network, enabling the cameras to be installed relatively quickly as the cabling requirements are minimal.
“All sites are busy,” said Danial, “so we undertake the majority of the work outside of term times when it’s mainly staff on-site rather than thousands of students. This approach works very well as we can coordinate the staged installation of cameras across the various sites much more effectively.”
